AI in Franchising, Documented Since the Beginning
When generative AI arrived in late 2022, franchising had a lot of questions and very few answers. FranchiseGPT started in the weeks that followed as a place to share what we were learning openly with the industry. Since then we have kept teaching, testing and documenting alongside franchisors, brokers and operators — not to sell anything, but to be a useful resource as the industry finds its footing. This is the record of that work, kept in the open.

Springboard 2022: Web 3.0 — before ChatGPT existed
Two months before ChatGPT launched, Dan Monaghan took the Springboard stage to walk franchisors through what generative AI would mean for their networks — how goods, services and customer experiences would be delivered through virtual channels, and what that does to a brand's intellectual property.
He also explained how blockchain and cryptocurrencies actually work, and the impact they would have on commerce: payments, ownership records, digital assets and the contracts behind them.
The session used real franchisor examples, including what McDonald's and Panera were already filing and building, to make the case that brand protection and virtual presence were operating decisions, not futurism.
It is included here as the starting point: the applications were being explained to the franchise industry before the tools most people now use were publicly available.

FranchiseGPT launches
Founded in the first months of ChatGPT to help franchisors and franchisees apply generative AI to real franchise work rather than treat it as a novelty.
The original resources were an AI tools hub, a franchise prompt library, and an idea forum where the community traded what was actually working.

"Unlocking the Potential of ChatGPT" eBook
The industry's first practical guide to ChatGPT written specifically for franchising — what to use it for, what to keep away from it, and how to brief it well.
Downloaded thousands of times across the franchise community; now in its 3rd edition.

IFA multipart webinar series
Part 1: Foundations of AI for Franchises. Part 2: ChatGPT for Franchises, With Examples.
The series moved the industry conversation from curiosity to application, with franchisor examples in every session.
Part 1 drew one of the highest live attendances of any IFA webinar that year, and part 2 reached an even larger live audience.

AI Practitioners roundtables
Free monthly sessions where franchise leaders compared notes on what was working in their own systems. Described here as history: the roundtables ran their course and are not currently convening.

The shift from prompts to workflows
The question changed from "what do I type" to "how do I redesign the work." A clever prompt helps one person once; a workflow changes what an entire network is capable of.
The tool stack is the living artifact of that shift — organized by the function it performs in a franchise system, not by which chatbot is popular.

Springboard conference talk
A full session on distributing intelligence across a network: organizational memory, the applications built on top of it, and the governance that keeps it defensible.
All talksA keynote on using AI for competitive advantage rather than task convenience. Frontier models now outperform consultants on strategy and MBAs on ideation, so the real question is where a franchisor points the technology. Drawing on the theory of constraints, the session argues AI should be aimed at the bottleneck in the business — moving up a hierarchy of value from tasks to scale, optimization, and finally AI as a strategic thought partner. Two techniques carry most of the leverage: asking the model to interview you instead of writing a perfect prompt, and building an advisory board of researched personas. The second half covers the demand side, where AI search is displacing Google as the discovery layer, with franchise examples in lead follow-up, dead-lead reactivation, broker matching, and support deflection.
- Aim AI at the constraint in the business, not at whatever task is nearest — most AI use sits at the bottom of the value hierarchy and never reaches strategy.
- Stop engineering prompts and start briefing: give the model the problem, ask it to interview you, and treat researched personas as a standing advisory board.
- Discovery is moving into the models, and franchise development leads sourced from AI assistants can already close at multiples of organic search.

The AI-Powered Franchisor playbook
The current thesis: context is the asset, twelve working applications, and governance as infrastructure.

What's next
The direction is consistent. Capability keeps moving closer to the unit: voice agents answering every call in every territory, expert judgment packaged so a network's best operators are available to all of it, and organizational memory treated as the franchisor's core asset rather than a byproduct of software.
None of that changes the franchisor's job. It changes how much of the job can be distributed.
